This text reflects on the phenomenon of miracles as a method of activating images in the late Middle Ages, based on representative examples linked to Gothic sculptures in Majorca (Spain): Our Lady of the Miracle in Palma and the crucifixes in Alcudia and Sóller. The portents linked to these images align with how the sculptures came to life, through secreting blood or sweat. The impact of the miracles also holds interest since perceptions of the images led to greater devotion after the portentous events. These elements are analysed through documents from the 15th and 16th centuries that narrate the miracles, as well as later items testifying to the devotional boom the sculptures have enjoyed over the centuries.
